The permanent home port for the battleship Missouri will not be selected until March or April, several months later than originally anticipated, said U.S. Navy spokesman Lt. Max Allen.
Long Beach, San Francisco and Honolulu are the contenders in the contest for the ship, which is expected to bring an annual payroll of $25 million, translating into local construction, retail and shipyard jobs.
A scouting team, headed by a retired captain, presented its report last month to top Navy officials, and a decision was expected in late December or early January. But Secretary of the Navy John Lehman wants more time to review the findings and proposals from each city, Allen said.
