Blood supplies are critically low in Los Angeles and Orange counties, the American Red Cross reported, with Type O and Type B deliveries to hospitals being made only in emergencies. Dr. Paul Thompson, Red Cross medical director, estimated that 6,000 donations are necessary to bring supplies back up to normal. He said the shortage was caused by a drop in donations during the holidays and poor weather.
