LIMA, Peru — About 50 guerrillas of the Maoist Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) movement attacked a copper mine, and at least seven were killed in a gun battle with police and soldiers, Interior Minister Oscar Brush Noel said.
The minister, speaking with reporters Monday, said four policemen were wounded in the Saturday battle at the Minas Canaria mine in the Andes 310 miles southeast of Lima.
According to a police report, the guerrillas apparently planned to take dynamite from the mine but were repulsed.
