Prep Basketball BOYS
La Salle 54, St. Genevieve 52
Jim Mathews celebrated his 31st birthday, but during the game he must have felt 50 years old.
The La Salle head coach watched his Lancers go out to a 15-point lead late in the third quarter only to have it whittled down to 41-39 with five minutes left in the game before finally holding on for 54-52 win over St. Genevieve.
The Lancers were led by center Joe Hart, who scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had five assists and four steals. Luis Castro had 14 points and six rebounds. The Valiants were paced by Mo Guardado’s 14 points and Oliver Dado, who had 12.
St. Genevieve shot poorly from the floor, hitting only 4 of 20 in the first half and 33 percent overall. The Valiants scored 21 of their points from the free throw line.
La Salle’s win now puts their record at 2-1 in the Santa Fe League and 6-8 overall. St. Genevieve dropes to 0-3 in the league and 6-7 overall.
