Fog Disrupts Planes, Races
Thick fog creeping in from the ocean forced closure of Long Beach Municipal Airport and cancellation of the last nine races at Los Alamitos Tuesday night.
A spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the airport was officially closed at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and incoming flights were diverted to Los Angeles International and John Wayne International Airports.
Los Angeles International Airport spokesman John Smith said two Jet America flights originally scheduled to land at Long Beach landed at his airport instead.
He said the west end of Los Angeles International was shut down for a while early in the evening, but was reopened at 10:30 p.m.
A Long Beach airport spokesman said that facility would remain closed until dawn.
There were scattered patches of heavy fog in Orange County, the worst of the problems in the Los Alamitos area where the races were cancelled.
