Creative Teamwork for Desert Auction

Seating is limited to 450, thus, the supply/demand problem is creating interest in MAPS (Museum Auction of Palm Springs) on Saturday.

The Women’s Committee of the Palm Springs Desert Museum has lined up Marvin Newman, Butterfields, to conduct the sold-out auction at 7 p.m. in the Annenberg Theater. First comes the cocktail buffet.

Judy Gelfand, MAPS Committee chairman, is assured success, what with her creative team: people such as Clara Burgess, Sharon Apfelbaum, Pat Heller, Leslie Gebhart, Sue Rose, Gladys Rubinstein, Jeannette Vitkin, Corinne Friedlander, Helen Galen, Hortense Singer, Dorothy Tenney and Marjorie Victor.

Museum director Morton J. Golden is keeping track of it all.

Look who are on the covers of magazines. Hernando Courtright’s beauteous daughter Carina is absolutely smashing in her Western feathered hat on this month’s Town & Country, but wait until you see her inside atop a Brahman bull, shaded only with a parasol and saguaro cactus! Fun.

In an article about Inaugural finery for the big week and what outstanding congressional wives might wear, she won cover spot over four other most attractive candidates: French Wallop, wife of Sen. Malcolm Wallop and the woman, we understand, who handled all the travel arrangements for the Reagan-Bush campaign; Grace Nelson, wife of Florida congressman Bill Nelson; Lisa Edwards, wife of Oklahoma’s Rep. Mickey Edwards; and Alison Leland, wife of Texas Rep. Mickey Leland of Houston.

Dutch Indonesian vegetarian fare is on tap Friday evening for the serious-but-fun CRSP (Cooperative Resources and Services Project, known as the Co-op Resource Center) benefit in the enclosed carrousel on the Santa Monica Pier.

Proceeds benefit the group’s training and education programs to help communities develop cooperatively owned businesses such as food stores and child-care centers.

Jerry Voorhis Jr., son of the late U.S. congressman and Co-op advocate, will be there to see his father honored with the new Jerry Voorhis Spirit of Cooperation Award.

Provisionals of the Los Angeles Junior League met in the Gold Room at the Biltmore to hear Los Angeles County Chief of Protocol Margaret Paterson Carr and David Clark, author of “L.A. on Foot” and professor of oral history at UCLA.

It’s called a “Soapextravaganza.” Is it the first? Yes, Sandy Pollock coined the word, she says. The American Heart Assn., Soap Opera People magazine and the Hollywood Museum jointly present this “Affair of the Heart” on Jan. 27 at the Cocoanut Grove.

Champagne, a fashion show featuring costumes worn by TV’s most popular soap stars and a musical salute to Hollywood’s Golden Era make up the package.

Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie Brock) of “General Hospital” and Peter Reckell (Bo Brady) of “Days of Our Lives” are co-chairmen. Michael Logan, Soap Opera People editor, directs the show.

Australia Day is on the minds of the Consul General of Australia and Mrs. Basil Teasey. They entertain Jan. 25 at their home in Beverly Hills.

The Guild for Cystic Fibrosis plans “Celebration” on Jan. 26 at the Century Plaza to honor Mr. and Mrs. Andy Gump and Mr. and Mrs. Barry Gump.

A celebrity auction, dinner and dancing are fancy adjuncts to the presentations of the 1984 Breath of Life Awards to the two couples.

Comedian Dick Shawn will joke around. And favorite stars in the celebrity auction include stellar lights from “General Hospital,” “All My Children,” “Silver Spoons,” “Cheers,” “Dukes of Hazzard,” “St. Elsewhere” and “Hill Street Blues,” with pluses from area teams such as the Angels, Rams, Lakers.

Working this dinner committee are the Allen Baliks, the Mike Becks, the Ernie Cassells, the David Hooks, the Joseph O’Connells, the Tom Tomlinsons and the Mel Wynns.

Estherly Reifman, president of the Rainbow Guild three years, turned her gavel over to Jennifer Goddard at an installation luncheon at the Bistro Gardens.

The Rainbow is the support group for the Amie Karen Cancer Fund at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Founded 14 years ago, it’s raised more than $2 million.

First task is a children’s fashion show luncheon at 11 a.m. Feb. 3 at Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City. New board members taking a role in that are Janice Wallace, Jan Block, Karen Todman, Sherry Nussbaum, Nancy Hildebrand and Annie Foster Richter.

The Volunteer League stirs up “A Tasty Evening” Thursday at the Flower Pavilion in Tarzana.

Elmer Dills will be honorary host. The league is promising a “cookbook bistro” and tasty treats called “our best” and “more of our best.”

Southwest Museum trustees host a preview of “De Colores,” folk costumes of Mexico this evening at Southwest Museum at Arco Plaza. It’s then open to the public until March 9.
