The Environmental Protection Agency has set radioactive air pollution standards. The EPA acted after Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist refused to block the action of U.S. District Judge William Orrick in San Francisco who in November cited the agency and its administrator for contempt of court. The action resulted from a suit by environmentalists that challenged EPA’s plan to withdraw some proposed standards for exposure to airborne particles, known as radionuclides. Orrick said that, under federal law, the EPA had to declare radionuclides safe or publish rules governing them.
