Sen. Barry Goldwater said today that taxes must be raised and Americans told to “lower their way of living” to combat the federal government’s budget crisis.

The United States has become a welfare state and eliminating the entire defense budget would not solve the deficit problem, said the Arizona Republican, new chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

“We have to go to people and tell them that the way they live may change,” he said.

“The wage earner, the wealthy, the middle class, the retired people and particularly the people living on the wages of others have to know that everyone is going to have to make a change in life,” he added.

“The possibility of national bankruptcy is a distinct reality if we persist in unabated spending across the board.”
