Frederick Leads Pepperdine, 53-52
SANTA CLARA — Anthony Frederick followed in his own missed shot with 11 seconds left to give Pepperdine a 53-52 victory over Santa Clara Thursday night and sole possession of the West Coast Athletic Conference lead.
Frederick had 13 points, 19 rebounds and 9 blocked shots as the Waves (14-6 overall, 3-0 in the WCAC) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final five minutes to win their eighth consecutive game.
Nick Vanos, who had 20 points and 13 rebounds, gave the Broncos (13-6, 2-1) their final field goal of the game and a 50-41 lead with 5:12 left. Frederick and Dwyane Polee, who had 16 points, scored baskets to make it 50-45 before Santa Clara scored its final points on Harold Keeling’s two free throws with 4:14 left.
Frederick, Levy Middlebrooks and Polee scored in the final minutes to pull the Waves within 52-51, setting up Fredrick’s winning shot.
