Los Angeles County won a hearing on asbestos.
A U.S. bankruptcy court judge agreed to a request by the district attorney’s office for a Feb. 8 hearing in New York’s Southern District Court for Los Angeles County lawyers, who argued that Denver-based Manville Corp. had failed to publicize sufficiently a Jan. 31 deadline for filing claims against it. Manville, once the nation’s largest asbestos manufacturer, has been flooded with lawsuits involving health or financial damage from exposure to asbestos. The county, which filed a $50-million claim against Manville, plans to ask for a deadline extension and a campaign to alert other potential claimants.
