Jet America Airlines Inc., Long Beach, reported...
Jet America Airlines Inc., Long Beach, reported a loss for 1984 that amounted to a 149% turnaround from its 1983 profit, which had included a one-time gain of $6.4 million from the sale of tax benefits. It also said its operating profit was $3 million, down 21% from the previous year. It attributed the poorer performance to losses incurred in starting up a new route, the performance of a charter contract that was canceled on Jan. 27, severe price competition on the company’s Long Beach-Dallas/Fort Worth route and a decline in summer traffic due to passengers avoiding the Southern California area during the Olympic Games.
Amerada Hess Corp., New York, reported a loss of $3.97 million for the final three months of 1984 as losses nearly tripled from its beleaguered petroleum refining and marketing operations. The quarterly loss would have been worse except for a one-time after-tax gain of $4.8 million in the fourth quarter from the sale of stock in Louisiana Land & Exploration Co. In the fourth quarter of 1983, Hess had a profit of $57 million. For the year, earnings fell 17% to $170.5 million.
