The Reagan Administration agreed secretly in 1982 to sell advanced computers to France to upgrade nuclear missiles, apparently in exchange for the Paris government’s greater cooperation in abiding by nuclear arms agreements, Newsday reported. The Long Island, N.Y., newspaper said that senior State Department officials had confirmed the deal and that French government officials had refused to discuss it. If true, the agreement on high-tech computers would help France challenge the United States for the lead in placing commercial satellites in space.
