A newspaper delivery man from El Monte has been charged with the murders of two women and the attempted murder of a third, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday.

Robert Rodriguez, 30, who delivered the Los Angeles Times in the Rosemead area, was arraigned Wednesday in Alhambra Municipal Court on nine charges, including robbery, arson and rape in connection with attacks on women in his delivery area, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Rodriguez was accused of slaying Mai-Dao Dang Nguyen on Jan. 18, 1984, and Rosemary Hernandez on Aug. 18, 1984.

Nguyen was found lying in her front yard, suffering from a skull fracture, and died in a hospital four days later. The body of Hernandez, 34, was found by firefighters who put out a blaze at her house. She had been stabbed to death.

Rodriguez was arrested after an attack in the same area Feb. 1 on Shirley Lu, who was slashed and stabbed by an assailant with a knife.

Rodriguez had delivered The Times in the Rosemead area for more than two years, working for an independent delivery contractor.
