Two More Britons Released by Libya
LONDON — Two more Britons have been released from jail in Libya, bringing to six the number of British detainees freed in the last week, the Foreign Office said Tuesday.
Michael Brennan and Hugh Wylie, sentenced to 33 months in jail in October, 1982, for smuggling alcohol into Libya, were released five months early, a spokesman said. Alcohol is banned in the strict Muslim nation.
Four other Britons were released last week after nine months’ detention. They were jailed after Britain severed diplomatic ties with Tripoli last April after the killing of a policewoman during a demonstration at the Libyan Embassy in London.
