Matadors Turn Back Sun Devils
TEMPE, Ariz. — Cal State Northridge’s baseball team improved its record to 5-1 this season with a 10-inning, 5-3 victory over Arizona State on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Jim Mitchell singled with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to drive in one run and Todd Mustin followed with a single to drive in another.
Glen Braybrooks got the victory in relief, his second of the season. Tom Harmina started and went the first eight innings.
CSUN scored three runs in the eighth inning to go ahead, 3-1. Bryant Long doubled and Mark Ban singled him in. Paul Kaplan got a two run homer.
Arizona State tied the score in the ninth inning.
In the 10th, a walk, a sacrifice, an error and another walk loaded the bases for CSUN to set up the winning run.
The loss was the fifth for the Sun Devils, who played in the College World Series last season, against six victories.
On Monday, CSUN scored six runs in the first four innings to coast to a 7-4 victory over Arizona State.
Steve Sharts pitched the first seven innings to gained his second win of the season against no losses. Braybrooks was credited with the save.
Dick Jaquez paced the hitting attack with a two-run homer in the second and an RBI-double.
Thursday, CSUN will play host to Whittier College before a Friday game with Cal State Long Beach. CSUN’s only loss this season was to Long Beach.
