Fullerton : Couple Whose Dog Was Shot by Police File Claim

A Brea couple, whose dog Dumpy was shot to death by a police officer chasing a burglary suspect, has filed a $100,000 claim against the City of Fullerton.

Ned Reilly, an attorney representing Bob and Mary Burdett, said that if the city denied the claim for damages, a civil suit would be filed.

Fullerton police had no comment on the claim Thursday. An internal investigation of the incident absolved the department of responsibility.

Officer Ron Gillett and his police dog entered the Burdetts’ backyard while chasing the burglary suspect Jan. 2. Dumpy attacked, and Gillett shot him.

The claim accuses officers of acting improperly and threatening the family.

The Police Department now requests that K-9 officers carry taser guns, or “stun guns,” to avoid a repetition of the shooting.

“Anything’s a good idea to keep something like this from happening,” Bob Burdett said.
