U.S. Plans for Greek Ouster
WASHINGTON — The Reagan Administration, stung by Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou’s threats to shut down U.S. military bases, has made contingency plans to withdraw American forces from the country, State Department and Pentagon officials said today.
“Anytime you have a government that states publicly it’s going to kick bases out it seems prudent to plan what you are going to do afterward,” a State Department official said. At the Pentagon, an official said that while the United States was not about to close its bases in Greece, which include a major Navy installation in Souda Bay, “we prudently look at all possible eventualities.”
