Maree to Attempt Personal Best in Mile in Michelob Meet
SAN DIEGO — Former world outdoor record-holder Sydney Maree said he will attempt to set a personal-best time in the mile in the Michelob Invitational indoor track meet tonight at the Sports Arena.
Maree’s personal best indoors is 3:52.40 set last week at New Jersey. To ensure a fast pace, meet promoters said they have brought in two runners to serve as “rabbits” in the race. Also in the field are Ireland’s Eamonn Coghlan, the world indoor record-holder in the mile (3:49.79), and Steve Scott, the U.S. indoor record-holder (3:51.80).
In the women’s mile, the favorite will be Rumanian Maricica Puica, the Olympic gold medalist at 3,000 meters. Also in the field will be U.S. Olympian Ruth Wysocki.
The meet will begin with high school events at 5:10 p.m. Open division pole vault competition will start at 7:15.
