College Baseball : Aztecs Score Twice in Ninth to Beat Irvine, 7-6
SAN DIEGO — San Diego State improved its record to 6-0 with a 7-6 nonconference win over UC Irvine Friday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Anteaters were leading, 6-5, going into the bottom of the ninth, but a bases-loaded throwing error by UCI second baseman Adam Ging allowed the tying and winning runs to score.
Aztec left fielder Rob Knowles went 4 for 5 and drove in two runs. First baseman Mark Grace was 3 for 3. Steve Mills was the winning pitcher.
In other action:
UC San Diego 6, Occidental 2--Triton first baseman Marc Williams, son of Padre Manager Dick Williams, had three hits and an RBI in the win at Olsen Field in La Jolla. Frank Califano pitched the first 7 innings for UCSD, and gained his first win of the year. David Adamson finished up for the Tritons, who are off to their best start ever at 5-0.
UC Riverside 9, USD 6--Left fielder Dan Noonan had three hits, scored three runs and drove in a run in the Highlanders win at USD. Torero first baseman Sean Baron had a homer and three RBIs. San Diego is 1-4.
In Palomar Tournament community college action:
San Diego Mesa 19, College of the Desert 1--Designated hitter Hemmy McFarlane had four hits, including a double and two home runs, and drove in seven runs to lead the Olympians in the tournament’s opening round at San Marcos.
Mesa second baseman Robert Fletcher also had four hits--a homer, single and two triples--and five RBIs. Dean Wilkins pitched the first five innings for the Olympians and picked up the win. It was the first victory for Mesa under new Coach Eric Swanson.
In other opening-round tournament games, Mt. San Antonio beat Mira Costa 9-5 and Palomar defeated Chaffey 5-3.
