NBA Roundup : Short Scores 46 in Double-Overtime Victory
Purvis Short scored 46 points, including eight in overtime, as the Golden State Warriors broke a six-game losing streak with a 125-121 double-overtime victory over the Washington Bullets at Oakland Sunday.
Short, who ranks second among NBA scorers, reached 40 points for the fifth time this season.
But the victory was just the 12th for Golden State, which had lost 22 of its last 23 games and has 41 defeats this season. The loss was Washington’s third straight.
Forward Cliff Robinson of Washington scored a season-high 32 points, including two on a shot in the final second of the first overtime, which ended at 112-112.
The Bullets, who were behind by 15 points early in the game, held a 99-96 lead with 5:28 left in the fourth quarter and scored only 22 points over the remaining 15:28 of playing time.
Regulation ended with the score tied at 101. Short scored six points in the first overtime and two in the second.
Guard Lester Conner of the Warriors scored the first four points of the second overtime and Jerome Whitehead added five points later in the period.
Guard Eric Floyd scored 26 for the Warriors, and Bullet guard Jeff Malone had 25.
Milwaukee 125, Chicago 105--Sidney Moncrief scored 21 points and Terry Cummings 20 as the Bucks won at Milwaukee. Ricky Pierce added a season-high 17.
The win was the Bucks’ third in a row and lifted their Central Division lead to five games over idle Detroit and 11 games over the Bulls, who lost their 10th road game in a row.
“We felt that this game was important,” Moncrief said. “Detroit lost Saturday night (125-114 to Philadelphia) and Chicago is within our division, so it counts a full game.
“We wanted to come out and establish who was in control. We felt it was a big opportunity for our team, if we came out strong, to control the ballgame.”
Michael Jordan scored 26 points for the Bulls.
Portland 115, Kansas City 96--Rookie Sam Bowie scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Trail Blazers at Portland.
The Blazers trailed, 31-25, after the first period, but Bowie triggered a 29-19 Blazer rally in the second quarter, scoring seven points and blocking two shots.
The Blazers led, 54-50, at the half and then totally dominated the Kings in the last half, outscoring them 61-46.
Portland’s Mychal Thompson had a game-high 26 points, including 11 in the third period, while Jim Paxson added 17 and rookie Jerome Kersey fired in 16.
Mike Woodson had 25 points for the Kings.
Phoenix 115, Indiana 97--Alvan Adams scored 23 points as the Suns used a second-quarter spurt to win at Indianapolis. Indiana led, 37-36, with 7:32 left in the second quarter before the Suns outscored the Pacers, 10-2, to take command. Michael Holton had six of his 15 points during that spurt. The Suns led, 54-46, at halftime.
The Suns put together another spurt early in the second half, outscoring Indiana, 11-2, to take a 69-52 lead and it was 91-67 by the end of the third period.
Larry Nance scored 21 points for the Suns, while Jim Thomas led Indiana with 19 points.
The Suns have now won six of their last eight games.
