La Verne
University of La Verne officials say they are considering a new location for a controversial dormitory. Donald Clague, university executive vice president, said the administration may forego plans to construct the building, at an estimated cost of $2.2 million, on 3rd Street near B Street, and may move it to a B Street location closer to campus. About 250 residents of a neighborhood near the proposed site of the dormitory oppose its construction, saying it would aggravate traffic congestion in the area. “Would you want to live next to a dormitory?” asked homeowner Mike M. Morales, a former mayor of La Verne who is leading the opposition. Morales said a petition signed by about 280 residents against the dormitory helped persuade the City Council to defer approval of the building. The council postponed action on the matter Tuesday pending further study.
