7 Gulf Cities in Race for Port
WASHINGTON — Navy Secretary John F. Lehman Jr. today narrowed a list of 16 Gulf Coast cities competing for a new Navy port to seven finalists and ordered his site evaluation team to launch a new round of studies.
The secretary’s decision is the latest step in what has become the most intensive competition ever waged by cities for a Navy facility. The cities surviving the first cut are Mobile, Ala.; Pensacola, Fla.; Lake Charles, La.; Pascagoula, Miss.; Corpus Christi, Tex.; Houston and Galveston, Tex., which submitted a joint application, and Key West, Fla.
