Bruins at Cal, Hoping to Stay in Pac-10 Race
BERKELEY — UCLA will take on Cal tonight at 8, fearing a freeze. That’s not the weather, but the Bears’ delay game, which Bruin Coach Walt Hazzard expects to encounter.
The Bruins, 11-11 overall but only 2-9 on the road after their victory at Stanford, are hoping to sweep the Bay Area teams for a last-ditch run in the Pacific 10 basketball race. UCLA is in fifth place with an 8-5 record but only two games out of first. After this, they’ll play three of their four remaining conference games at home, against USC, Arizona and Oregon State, all of whom they trail.
UCLA won the first meeting of these teams, 70-59, at Pauley Pavilion.
The Bears are 12-10 overall and 4-8 in the conference. They boast perhaps the finest guard tandem in the conference, sophomores Kevin Johnson and Chris Washington, along with an impressive freshman, Leonard Taylor, a 6-8 forward who has to play center.
