Garden Grove : School District Purchases Two-Way Radio System
A two-way radio system for all school buses and some cars has been purchased by the school board for $278,140.
The Garden Grove Unified School District will receive 94 two-way Motorola Inc. radios plus permanent maintenance. It also will have use of a repeater on Mt. Santiago until the district obtains its own frequency. An application already has been made to the Federal Communications Commission.
“Presently, our bus drivers have no way of contacting dispatchers or mechanics in the event of breakdowns or other emergencies,” said district spokesman Alan Trudell. State law prohibits bus drivers from leaving disabled vehicles, he said.
Additionally, many schools are designated emergency shelters during disasters. The two-way radios will provide a backup communications system if telephone service is interrupted.
