Soviet Armenia Gets Most Snow in 30 Years
MOSCOW — The worst snowstorm in 30 years whipped into the southern republic of Armenia this week, dumping waist-deep snow that closed roads, pulled down power and telephone lines and damaged farms and factories, press reports said Thursday.
In three days, from Sunday through Tuesday, the snowfall in parts of the normally mild region was 1 1/2 times the annual average, the newspaper Trud reported. The newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda said it was the worst storm in 30 years, but neither paper gave specific figures on the amount of snowfall.
Trud said snow was piled “waist deep” on one highway in Armenia that connects the capital city of Yerevan to the city of Sevan.
