Southern Section 4-A Girls : Defense Saves Ocean View Victory Over Inglewood
Ocean View High School girls basketball team held Inglewood scoreless the last three minutes of the game to win, 45-43, in a Southern Section 4-A game Saturday at Inglewood.
The Sea Hawks (20-5) trailed by as many as 31-22, midway through the third quarter, but rallied behind Trina Vlachos (15 points) who was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
Michelle Chomicz had 12 points and a steal with 13 seconds left, which led to a key free throw by Teri Zanelli with 5 seconds left.
Guard Rosalind Moore led Inglewood (15-9) with 22 points.
Fountain Valley 47, Hawthorne 42--In an aggressive game, the Barons finally broke down the Cougars full-court press for the win at Fountain Valley. Fountain Valley (19-6) was led by Jackie Cook’s 17 points and game-high 12 rebounds. Sisters Celine and Andrea Kabwasa led Hawthorne with 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Mater Dei 71, Rio Mesa 51--The host Monarchs dropped into a zone defense in the fourth quarter and blew open a 10-point game. Mater Dei led, 53-43, at the end of the third quarter but outscored the Spartans, 18-8, to wrap up the opening round win.
Sophomore Geri Gainey led all scorers with 24 points on 10-for-16 shooting. Kim Ellerman and Mary Gainey added 13 and 12, respectively for Mater Dei (24-3).
Rio Mesa was led by Mitsie O’Brian’s 16 points. Yvette Young added 12, all in the first half.
