Dutch Farmer Hopes to Reap Peace by Sowing Missiles

--A Dutch farmer who wrote a political manifesto advocating nonviolence has offered the Russians his land as a site for Soviet SS-20 missiles if Holland deploys U.S.-built NATO rockets. Leender Plaisier, who says he doesn’t belong to any peace movement, said it would “even be safer if no missiles were deployed at all.” But he added: “If these 48 rockets are deployed, and I’m sure that will happen, why not counterbalance them with the same number of Soviet missiles?” Plaisier, 44, said he went to the Soviet Embassy in The Hague recently to offer his 109-acre plot in Dronten, a central Dutch farming community, as a deployment site. He said Soviet officials did not make any promises but that “they agreed they did not like the nuclear buildup either.” He said he wouldn’t mind giving up his crops of beets, wheat and potatoes that he now grows. “I’m not concerned about myself,” he said. “It’s future generations that count.”

--A 6-year-old boy, bluffing with an unloaded rifle, scared off a man holding a knife to his mother’s throat, saving her life and probably averting a massacre of the family, Sheriff Paul Abel said. “He’s something else, isn’t he?” Abel said after Jimmy Roland confronted the man in the yard of the family’s home near Bethel Acres, Okla. “The little boy ran a bluff,” the sheriff said. “This is what just blew my mind. He knew the rifle wasn’t loaded.” Father Floyd Roland was at work, mother Jacquelyn Roland was in the living room and five children were playing in the kitchen “when someone tried to kick the kitchen door open,” Abel said. Jimmy got the .22-caliber rifle and his mother picked up a pot. They went out of the house and she was grabbed by a masked man who put a knife to her throat. Jimmy cocked the rifle and pointed it at the man. “You turn my mommy loose or I’ll kill you,” he said. The man did just that and fled. The sheriff picked up three men 15 minutes later.
