Preps : EASTER TOURNAMENTS : Simi Valley’s 11-0 Record Is on the Line

Simi Valley High’s baseball team has been hot all season.

Everytime the Pioneers have rolled the dice, they have come up with a 7, or 8, or 9, or 10.

Coach Mike Scypher’s squad has a team batting average of higher than .450 and even scored 32 runs in one game.

The Pioneers are 11-0, but their record is on the line during the spring break.

First, they will compete in the 16-team Monroe Tournament, which begins today among four high schools. Simi Valley then will compete in a tournament in Las Vegas starting Thursday.

The Monroe Tournament, in its 14th year, features a potential matchup of Simi Valley and Chatsworth in the final. Those two are considered among the Valley’s top teams.

Today’s action begins at 11 a.m. with North Hollywood at Monroe, Westchester at Birmingham, San Fernando at Chatsworth and Sylmar at Granada Hills.

In 2:30 p.m. games, Grant and Taft play at Monroe, Reseda and Simi Valley at Birmingham, Polytechnic and Venice at Chatsworth and San Pedro/Cleveland at Granada Hills.

The quarterfinals are Monday, while the semifinals and finals are Tuesday. The championship game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Birmingham.

The Babe Herman Tournament in Glendale also gets under way today. Among the local teams playing are Newbury Park, Royal, Burroughs, Hart and Saugus.

The Thousand Oaks Tournament starts Monday and runs through Wednesday. The championship is Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Thousand Oaks varsity field.

Camarillo and Montclair Prep are two of the highly regarded Valley teams that will compete in that tourney.
