Attorneys for the Reagan Administration have asked a federal District Court to dismiss a lawsuit challenging last year’s establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with the Vatican.

Claims that the step shows preference for one religious group over others, contrary to the Constitution, are being pressed by Americans United for Separation of Church and State and several religious groups.

Deputy Assistant Atty. Gen. Carolyn Kuhl said the President’s foreign policy authority is so broad that he “may have the power” to send representatives to the Church of England or the Baptist World Alliance if such actions would advance U.S. foreign policy objectives.
