Bolsa Grande Tournament : Capistrano Valley Wins Two to Advance to Semifinals Against La Mirada High

The Capistrano Valley High School baseball team evened its record at 6-6 Saturday, winning its first two games in the Bolsa Grande Tournament at Los Amigos.

The Cougars beat Los Amigos in the first round, 6-5, scoring the winning run in the eighth inning on a single and a double.

Then in a second-round game, Capistrano Valley beat Costa Mesa, 8-1, as Danny Blancett walked one and struck out 10 in seven innings. Blancett evened his record at 2-2 and contributed to his own cause by going 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Jeff Kelley went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Cougars to add to the attack. Rich Wanne led Costa Mesa by going 2 for 3 with a triple. With the wins, the Cougars advance to the tournament semifinals against La Mirada at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Rancho Alamitos.

In other Bolsa Grande Tournament first-round action:

Estancia 7, Pacifica 6--Relief pitcher Jim Foley’s single in the seventh inning drove in what proved to be the winning run for the Eagles. Foley’s hit capped a three-run inning as the Eagles eked out the win. Foley improved his record to 5-1.

Bolsa Grande 3, Artesia 2 (9 innings)--Robby Walker doubled in the winning run in the top of the ninth inning for the Matadors at Bolsa Grande. Lino Martinez (1-2) picked up the win.

Leuzinger 2, Santa Fe 0--The Olympians shutout the Chiefs at Bolsa Grande.

La Mirada 3, Rancho Alamitos 2--The Matadors edged the Vaqueros by a run at Rancho Alamitos.

And in Bolsa Grande Tournament second round action:

Leuzinger 6, Bolsa Grande 1--The Olympians scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Matadors. Jamie Johnston (4-1) picked up the win.

Leuzinger (10-4) advances to the championship semifinals Monday against Estancia at 10:30 a.m. at Bolsa Grande. The Matadors (4-8) move on to play in the fifth-place game Monday at 1:30 p.m.

Estancia 8, La Serna 3--Ken Harrison and Mike Lujan each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Eagles to the victory. Raul Jara picked up the win. Estancia (9-4) advances to the championship semifinals where it will meet Leuzinger Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Bolsa Grande.

Los Amigos 12, Glenn 11 (9 innings)--Wes Lang hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning for the victory at Los Amigos. The Lobos play again in the consolation round on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Los Amigos.

La Mirada 14, Santiago 9--The Matadors dumped the Cavaliers to advance to the semifinals, where they will meet Capistrano Valley Monday at 1:30 at Rancho Alamitos.

Artesia 12, Santa Fe 2--The Pioneers eliminated the Chiefs from the tournament with this easy win.

Rancho Alamitos 9, Orange Lutheran 1--The Vaqueros rebounded from their first-round loss to rout the Lancers.

Lynwood 8, Pacifica 2--The Knights handily defeated the Mariners.
