Loyola Marymount University’s baseball team, back in the race in the West Coast Athletic Conference, takes a break from league play this week, hosting Southern California College at 2:30 p.m. today and Cal State Fullerton at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Lions are 18-19 after Tuesday’s 14-inning, 7-6 loss at USC. They are 6-6 in the WCAC, and lead the conference in hitting at .326. The Lions are hitting .348 in 12 league games sand have won five of their last six in the WCAC.

Billy Bean raised his league-leading average to .420, going 8 for 15 last week, and Mike Whitt did likewise, improving to .392. But the hottest hitter is outfielder Reggie Lambert, who went 11 for 16 with six runs batted in and five walks to raise his average to .400. Lambert has a 15-game hitting streak.

Cal State Dominguez Hills’ baseball team plays three non-conference games, hosting U.S. International University at 2:30 p.m. Friday and UC San Diego in a noon double-header Saturday. The Toros are in second place in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference at 10-4, and are 21-15 overall. Todd Corman has been named women’s basketball coach at Loyola Marymount University, the third in three years. The 27-year-old Marina del Rey resident coached basketball for four years at El Segundo High School and was at Oak Park High and San Fernando Valley Christian before that. A 1979 graduate of USC, Corman played at Beverly Hills High. He replaces Dick Beede, whose team went 3-24 against a tough schedule. The Lion-nets will compete in the new women’s West Coast Athletic Conference schedule next season.

Redondo High has moved up to fourth in the latest CIF 4-A baseball Top 10, while El Segundo’s girls are No. 1 in the first 1-A softball poll. St. Bernard’s baseball team fell from third to seventh in the 1-A poll. Miraleste is No. 1 in the boys’ 4-A tennis rankings with Palos Verdes third and South Torrance fourth, and Mira Costa tops the 4-A boys volleyball poll, with North Torrance third and Palos Verdes eighth.

Harbor College, leading the Metropolitan Conference baseball race, plays a league game at Los Angeles City College at 2:30 p.m. today, then hosts the Cal Poly Pomona junior varsity in non-league action at noon Saturday. El Camino is at Pierce at 2:30 p.m. today, then plays the USC junior varsity at 7 p.m. Saturday at USC.
