King Named Top Player, Dykstra Coach of the Year
Julie King, a junior guard for Gahr High School, was named the Southeast area’s girls Player of the Year at The Times’ annual awards ceremony Tuesday night at the Harry Chandler Auditorium in the Times Mirror Building in downtown Los Angeles.
Eleanor Dykstra, who led Valley Christian to the Southern Section 1-A title, was named Coach of the Year. Valley Christian, a sophomore-dominated team, finished the season with a 20-7 record.
King averaged 20 points and 4 assists a game for Gahr and was called “probably the finest shooter in CIF” by her coach, Thomas Pryor.
In the South Coast area, Kim Thompson of Compton’s 4-A champions was named Player of the Year, and her coach, Carolyn Montgomery, was named Coach of the Year.
