Woman of Year Award to UCSD Astronomer
E. Margaret Burbidge, director of UC San Diego’s Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences, has been named the 36th Woman of the Year by the Presidents’ Council of Women’s Service, Business and Professional Organizations of San Diego.
Burbidge, whose career spans almost half a century, was picked from a group of nine local “Women of Achievement” who were named by the council last month.
The world-renowned astronomer is deputy principal investigator of the Faint Object Spectroscope, a major experimental telescope that will be launched into space by the United States next year.
