Reagan to Honor German War Dead During Bonn Visit
BONN — President Reagan will lay a wreath at a military cemetery for German war dead and then attend a church service when he visits West Germany next month, the government said today.
Reagan earlier this year turned down appeals from U.S. Jewish leaders to visit the former Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, near Munich, during his stay, saying such a visit would be inappropriate.
Reagan and Chancellor Helmut Kohl will attend ceremonies for German war dead on May 5, the 30th anniversary of West German membership in NATO and three days before the 40th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
Local officials said most of those buried at the cemetery, on the outskirts of Bitburg, were German soldiers from World War II.
Reagan is due to visit West Germany from May 1 to 6 for a state visit and the two-day, seven-nation economic summit.
