Kennedy’s Older Son Denies He’ll Run for Office Next Year
WASHINGTON — The older son of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has denied a report that he will run for Congress next year in the district of retiring House Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr., a spokesman for the senator said today.
Edward Jr. recently moved into O’Neill’s Boston district from his father’s home in a Washington suburb. He will be 25, the minimum age for serving in Congress, before next year’s election.
The spokesman said Edward Jr. denied a Boston newspaper report that he had decided to run for O’Neill’s seat.
However, he said the senator’s son did not rule out the possibility of running for political office some time in the future.
Edward Jr., who lost his right leg to cancer 11 years ago, has been touring the country speaking on behalf of the handicapped and helping to raise funds for African famine victims.
