Reagan Urges Congress to OK Aid to Contras
WASHINGTON — President Reagan began one of the toughest selling jobs of his presidency today, exhorting Congress to “act quickly and responsibly” to approve $14 million in aid to Nicaraguan rebels or risk U.S. prestige and credibility.
Reagan echoed the theme of his successful campaign last month for the MX missile in asking Congress again to close ranks behind his foreign policy.
“I’m asking Congress to join me in the bipartisan spirit so essential to our security by providing this small amount--$14 million--for the more than 15,000 Nicaraguans who are struggling for democracy,” Reagan said in asking aid for the rebels, known as contras.
“It’s so little,” he added, “yet such an important symbol of our resolve.”
