Procter & Gamble continued to fight rumors.
The household products manufacturer said it has enlisted private investigators and established a toll-free hot line to combat a nationwide resurgence of rumors accusing the company of supporting Satanism. The company said that it has received 4,000 calls on the subject this month and that the inquiries are increasing at their greatest rate since the summer of 1982. The rumors, spread by handbills, charge that P&G; supports the “Church of Satan” and that the company’s crescent-moon logo is the church’s symbol.
