College Baseball : SCC Surprises Cal State Fullerton, 9-8 : Victory Gives Vanguards Their First Win Over Titans in 12 Years
For the first time in 12 years, the Southern California College baseball team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 9-8, Wednesday at Fullerton.
The victory was the second time in two weeks that the Vanguards have defeated an NCAA Division 1 team. Earlier this month, SCC, a NAIA team, defeated UC Irvine, 9-5, at Irvine.
A four-run second inning gave the Vanguards (28-14-2) a 6-2 lead. The Titans (25-24-1) scored twice in the ninth inning to make it close.
Shortstop Dave Turney’s two-run single sparked the Vanguard’s four-run second inning. Ron Nelson also had a second inning RBI to bring his RBI season total to 47.
Relief pitcher Edwardo Andrews (5-9) was credited with the save for SCC.
In other action:
UC Irvine 7, United States International University 4--Bob Perry’s two-run homer keyed a three-run sixth inning to lead the Anteaters to the nonconference victory Wednesday at Irvine.
Perry was 2 for 3 and had three RBIs for Irvine (19-20-1). UCI’s Brady Anderson hit his eighth homer of the season with a solo shot in the seventh.
David Trussell (3-2) picked up the win and Bo Kent earned his fourth save for UCI.
The Gulls (15-18-1) outhit the Anteaters, 12-10.
