U.S. Upsets Sweden in World Hockey; Canada and Soviet Union Also Win
PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia — Corey Millen scored the winning goal early in the final period Thursday as Team USA upset Sweden, 4-3, in the World Ice Hockey Championships.
Team Canada, led by Tony Tanti with two goals and one assist, coasted to a 5-0 victory over West Germany, and the Soviet Union scored four power-play goals in beating Finland, 5-1.
The Americans fell behind in the first period when Swedish center Kent Nilsson, a late pickup from the Calgary Flames, beat goalie John Vanbiesbrouck with a 12-footer.
At 12:11, Clark Donatelli of Boston University took a feed from Bob Miller and scored a short-handed goal.
The Americans added a power-play goal for a 2-1 lead in the second period when Daniel Dorion deflected a blast from defenseman Gary Haight into the net.
The Swedes tied the game with a power-play goal of their own at 8:31 of the second period as Nilsson knocked in a rebound.
Center Mark Johnson got the United States the lead again by skating between two defensemen and slapping in a 40-footer.
At 1:09 of the final period, Lars-Gunnar Pettersson tied the score. But just 32 second later, Millen slipped the puck in for the winner.
