SDSU’s Latanya Sheffield Runs Second-Fastest Women’s 400

SAN DIEGO — San Diego State’s Latanya Sheffield ran the second-fastest women’s 400 meters in NCAA history Saturday, winning the race in 53.09 seconds in a dual meet against UC Irvine.
With Sheffield leading the way, the Aztecs beat the Anteaters, 93-58. Latanya Tatum also had an outstanding day for SDSU, winning the triple jump with a school-record leap of 37-2 1/2.
In a men’s tri-meet, SDSU outscored UCI and Cal Poly Pomona. The Aztecs totaled 123 points, Irvine had 50 and Cal Poly Pomona had 27.
Austin Shanks led SDSU by winning the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.89 seconds and the 400-intermediate hurdles in 53.64. He ran a leg on the 400-relay team, which recorded a time of 40.34.
The Aztecs’ Jerry Nelson won the pole vault with a personal-best of 16-1.
