WASHINGTON — The Pentagon today named three California institutions--Caltech, Stanford University and the Naval Ocean Systems Center in San Diego--among a consortium of nine institutions to develop high-speed computers for President Reagan’s “Star Wars” missile defense program.
The group was given $9 million to study “new and innovative techniques” for high-speed computing using optical signal processing. Pentagon officials said all of the initial research would be unclassified and the information could be freely exchanged and published.
