El Camino to Host World Cup Soccer
El Camino College will host World Cup qualifying soccer games featuring the U.S. National Team against Trinidad/Tobago at 2 p.m. May 19 and against Costa Rica at 8 p.m. May 31. The games are part of a round-robin schedule to determine the field for the 1986 World Cup that will be played in Mexico.
The United States will also play qualifying games in St. Louis and Costa Rica.
The winner of the U.S.-Trinidad/Tobago-Costa Rica group will meet the winner of Canada-Guatemala-Haiti later this year with the winner advancing to Mexico.
The U.S. team includes Rolling Hills High graduate Steve Sharp and former UCLA star Paul Caliguri.
Tickets for both local matches are on sale at five South Bay sites: Ski Racquet, 20611 Hawthorne Blvd., Torrance; Edwards Soccer and Sports Center, 5027 Pacific Coast Highway, Torrance; Soccer Dynamics, 22223 Palos Verdes Blvd., Torrance; H L International Sports, 3509 Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach, and Whitmore’s Sports, 52 Peninsula Shopping Center. Tickets are also available through the Torrance Chamber of Commerce.
