Ex-Warrior Star to Be Grid Coach
John Featherstone, a former Mira Costa High and El Camino College star athlete, will return to the South Bay next fall as head football coach of the El Camino Warriors.
Featherstone, 35, has been offensive coordinator and chief recruiter for Santa Ana College since 1982. He has held assistant coaching positions at UC Berkeley, San Diego State, Mesa College and Grossmont College.
A Manhattan Beach native, Featherstone graduated from Mira Costa in 1967 with all-CIF ratings in football, track and baseball. He was an all-Metropolitan Conference wide receiver at El Camino before he transferred to San Diego State, where he teamed up with future pro quarterback Brian Sipe.
Featherstone will also teach physical education, in which he has a master’s degree with a minor in journalism. He has published a coaching manual, “The Double Wing Offense.”
He replaces Jack Reilly, who went to the University of Utah as offensive coordinator.
