Newport Beach : 34-Bed Psychiatric Center for Adolescents Opens
A private 34-bed psychiatric facility for 12- to 18-year-olds opened Wednesday in Newport Beach.
Located in a residential and commercial neighborhood at 1501 East 16th St., the Newport Harbor Psychiatric Institute provides treatment for youths with emotional and behavioral disorders who need longer treatment than is available at most hospitals, said David Ellisor, chief executive of the institute.
When full, it will have 35 to 40 staff members, including eight psychiatrists and seven nurses.
The facility, one of four of its kind in Southern California, provides patients with a “highly structured program” and will offer individual, group and family therapy along with art and occupational treatment, Ellisor said.
Patients can continue their schooling while at the hospital, and a plan for some to be able to attend special education classes offered by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District is under consideration, according to a district official.
