Princess Won’t Join in Honoring S. African

LONDON — Britain’s Princess Anne, fearing political embarrassment, has canceled her attendance at a student ceremony at London University to honor South African civil rights campaigner Winnie Mandela.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said the princess, who is chancellor of the university, accepted advice that her participation in next week’s ceremony might be given a political interpretation.
