Panel Endorses Walters as Next U.N. Ambassador

WASHINGTON — The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 10 to 0 Tuesday to recommend confirmation of Vernon A. Walters as the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Walters, 68, has previously served as a three-star Army general, a negotiator at the Paris peace talks during the Vietnam War, an interpreter to Richard M. Nixon when he was vice president and as deputy director of the CIA.
