Steinbrenner Fires Jockey
PIMLICO, Md. — George Steinbrenner and Brian Hurst, co-owners of Eternal Prince, decided today to replace jockey Richard Migliore with Chris McCarron after the horse ran 12th in a field of 13 in the Kentucky Derby. The colt is a probable starter for the Preakness Stakes on May 18.
Migliore won the Gotham Stakes and Wood Memorial with the colt, but Steinbrenner--who as owner of the N.Y. Yankees recently fired manager Yogi Berra--and Hurst were said to be unhappy with Migliore’s Derby ride. Eternal Prince went into the starting gate uneasily, became distracted by noise, broke poorly and was never a threat.
