Southern Section Badminton : Battle of the Unbeatens: Estancia, Buena Park to Meet in Final
Quan Nguyen swept two singles matches, then teamed with Kim Nguyen to win a mixed doubles match Thursday to lead the Estancia High School badminton team to an 11-8 win over Garden Grove in a Southern Section 4-A semifinal match played in the Argonauts’ gym at Garden Grove.
The top-seeded Eagles (18-0) will meet undefeated Buena Park (18-0) for the 4-A championship next Thursday at Westminster High School. It marks the third straight appearance in the championship match for Estancia, which won the title in 1983 and was runner-up to Marina last year.
Buena Park will be making its first appearance in the 4-A title match after defeating Nogales, 12-7, Thursday in the semifinals at Buena Park. The second-seeded Coyotes, 3-A champions in 1982 and 1983, were promoted to 4-A this year.
Buena Park was led by Matt Mallars, who defeated Sam Meksavanh, 15-9, 12-15, 15-5, and Rick Douangfithy, 15-5, 15-13, in singles play and then teamed with Joaane Quirion to defeat Meksavanh and Merlie Deguzman, 15-9, 15-10, in mixed doubles.
Tonya Vandervort also swept two girls singles matches, defeating Deguzman, 11-8, 1-11, 11-3, and Laiat Inthvong, 11-6, 11-2.
