Police Arrest 50 During Melee at Michigan Campus
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Police in riot gear swept through a crowd of nearly 1,000 people early Friday and made about 50 arrests when an annual graduation celebration at Central Michigan University erupted into a rock- and bottle-throwing melee.
“There was drinking and more drinking and then the bottles being thrown,” said Mount Pleasant Police Chief Martin Trombley. “We have to blame it on the consumption of alcohol.”
Those arrested were taken to Isabella County Jail, he said.
Mike Martin, a dispatcher with campus security, said the street was cleared about 2:30 a.m. and crews moved in to remove broken glass.
The annual “End of the World” party to celebrate the last day of examinations began about 1 p.m. Thursday, said Tom Wickham, editor of the campus newspaper, Central Michigan LIFE. The university does not sanction the party.
