Rafik Throws 6th No-Hitter as Viewpoint Opens Playoffs

Roxana Rafik pitched her sixth no-hitter as top-ranked Viewpoint High beat Mayfield, 6-0, Thursday, in the opening round of the Southern Section Small Schools softball playoffs at Pierce College.

Rafik, 15-1, had 11 strikeouts.

Kim Fields led the Viewpoint offense with a home run. Liesl Dano also contributed with two hits and a run batted in.

Viewpoint is 19-1.

Hart 4, Warren 0

Samantha Ford pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 10 as Hart won its opening-round Southern Section 4-A playoff game at home.

Hart jumped out to a quick lead when Laura Robb and Yvette Baltazar scored on Baltazar’s single to center field that was misplayed into a three-base error.

Hart is 20-4.

Burroughs 2, Cerritos 1

A fifth-inning throwing error by Cerritos enabled two runs to score as Burroughs won its opening-round Southern Section 4-A playoff game at Cerritos.

Christy Alves (14-5) pitched a complete game and struck out seven to earn the win.

Burroughs is 14-5.

Campbell Hall 16, Owens Valley 0

Campbell Hall scored 10 runs in the second inning en route to an opening-round win in the Southern Section Small Schools playoffs at McCambridge Park in Burbank.

Ruth Kirinda (10-0) pitched a complete game and scattered six hits to earn the win.

Campbell Hall, champion of the Delphic League, is 11-3.

Kennedy 14, San Fernando 1

Stephanie Rimington hit a home run and had three RBIs as first-place Kennedy finished its North Valley League schedule with a win at home.

Rimington had four of Kennedy’s 23 hits.

Cynthia Sullivan pitched the final three innings to earn the win.

Kennedy (9-1, 16-6) begins playoff competition next week.

El Camino 24, Reseda 0

El Camino pounded out 27 hits and finished the regular season undefeated as champion of the West Valley 4-A League with a win at Reseda.

Karen Walker led El Camino (15-0, 10-0) with four hits, including a home run. She also had five RBIs.

Beth Silverman (11-0) pitched a complete game and had seven strikeouts to earn the win.

BASEBALL

Reseda 9, Taft 0

Robert Wheatcroft hit a two-run homer, pitched a shutout and struck out 10 as Reseda won its West Valley League game at home.

John Grant hit a three-run homer, and J.P. Desenfants had three hits for Reseda.

Reseda is 7-7. Taft is 3-11.

Cleveland 7, Canoga Park 1

Dennis Moeller pitched a complete game, struck out 10 and had four hits as Cleveland won a West Valley League game at home.

Tim Sparks had three hits and two RBIs, and Ron Hedding had two RBIs for the Cavaliers.

Cleveland is 10-4 in league. Canoga Park is 6-8.

San Fernando 5, Van Nuys 1

Bobby Aparicio and Mike Oberlander combined to pitch a one-hitter as San Fernando won a Mid-Valley League game at home.

Aparicio pitched five innings and struck out 10 to earn the win.

Roy Mijares (.512) continued his hot-hitting streak with two hits and an RBI for San Fernando.

Birmingham 13, Monroe 12

Jordan Cook pitched a complete game and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh inning as Birmingham won a Mid-Valley League game at home.

Cook gave up five earned runs and struck out seven. He also had two hits and two RBIs.
